IntroductionNowadays, members of language teaching profession have a wider choice of textbooks to choose from than ever. The study of textbook development has also improved the quality of the textbooks. There are so many good textbooks out there, but many teachers still have a hard time selecting a good, appropriate textbook for their teaching context. The checklist I designed provides a useful guideline for evaluating ESL (English as a Second Language) textbook. It will provide a possible solution for the teachers who are struggling with choosing appropriate textbooks for the particular learners of the particular context. Each question is based on either theoretical background or my personal opinion derived from teaching experience. Using my checklist will help pre-service and in-service teachers to select textbook more efficiently.
Theoretical Background
Focus on forms
Focus on forms is now considered the traditional approach. The teacher or textbook writer divides the second language into segments of phonemes, morphemes, sentence, notions, functions, stress and intonation, and so on, and presents these to the learners one at a time. These elements may be graded according to the notion of frequency, educational value and difficulty. Though the elements are taught separately, the students are expected to synthesize the parts for use in communication. However, this is one of the shortcomings of focus on forms approach because the students may not be able to synthesize the parts after all the elements are taught.
