BODY
1. Theoretical approach
[1] The subject matter.
The interpreter must have some knowledge of the subject under discussion to interpret more naturally and correctly. However, it doesn`t mean that the interpreter should be an expert`s knowledge of the subject though he must have knowledge to be able to analyze intelligently. Surely, comprehension and knowledge are two different things.
For the people, they are rarely differentiated For the expert, however, the line between knowledge and understanding often becomes quite blurred because the rather circumscribed knowledge gained early in life simply becomes deeper, not wider. Remember that the interpreter is not in the same category as the specialist.
① The interpreter is NOT the initiator of information; just presented with information.
② The interpreter advances an opinion; just receive information which is given.
③ At least, the interpreter need to understand the information; might become an expert at analysis and exegesis.
④ The interpreter`s level of knowledge need not be identical to that of the speaker, but he mush have a comparable level of intellectual ability.
We need to know how deal with the knowledge inn that the acquisition of the knowledge takes place both before and during the conference.
1. the knowledge should be readily available and spring to mind spontaneously once the discussion gets under way.
2. The knowledge is not complete one, so the interpreter must bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical experience by on-the-job training.
3. Each statement made at a conference is a source of knowledge and information.
The interpreter is constantly forced to understand problems about which he knows little and this stimulates his curiosity and furthers and open-minded attitude.Knowing the technical term is generally of no help without some understanding of the processes involved. Even outside the conference hall, interpreter is constantly acquiring new types of knowledge which he can link up with what he hears at conferences.
