When we were young and carrying a chip on our shoulders, we did not think much about our mothers and fathers. We believed we knew everything about life. Their stories were boring and their advice unnecessary. We were in a hurry to leave our mark and to be recognised.
For those of us whose background seemed rather commonplace, we also felt ashamed of our parents. We preferred them to remain faceless. And why not? When others could claim their fathers to be teachers, headmasters, health inspectors and land revenue collectors, our were padi farmers, rubber tappers, fishermen, village shopkeepers and seasonal labourers.
We thought that the whole world was unjust. I secretly envied Mohd Bisharuddin Mohd Noor Basha, a classmate and a dear friend, because he was driven to school by his civil-servant father.
