The historical background
1. What is the Goth?

(2) Vathek - William Thomas Beckford
- It is the story of an eastern Caliph, a cruel tyrant who is both a sensualist and a magician and astrologer.
- It lacks the physical medieval setting of other Gothic novels, but has all the extremes of fear, of violence and of destruction.
- What Vathek lacks in the darkness of its physical setting it makes up for in darkness of characterization.
- There is more than a trace Vathek in of the Faust figure-the man who strives for more power than the supernatural order.
- Also there is moral ending.
- It has more complexity than its counterparts, and its tone darkens considerably as it progresses, with a movement from buffoonery to real evil on the part of the main character. ............
