“It was 1947, two years after the war when I began my journey to what my father called the Sodom of the North: New York…” The film Sophie’s Choice starts with the narration of an older and more experienced Stingo looking back at his arrival in Brooklyn. Stingo’s narration is non-diegetic; the sound is not coming from sources represented in the screen but rather from an intermediate place in the future where the old Stingo lives. On the other hand, Sophie’s narration is diegetic; her narration is synchronized to the storyline and there is always an indication that Sophie is present in the scene that she narrates. Stingo’s narration contains information to clarify and explain unrelated scenes or to facilitate understanding of the plot, while Sophie’s narration consists mostly of flashbacks of her past life. Stingo exists both within and outside of the story; in the story, he is a main component of the plot, interacting with Sophie and Nathan, while beyond the story, he narrates his past as an older figure. In terms of narration, the old Stingo only “appears” as the voice of the narrator. On the other hand, Sophie’s face is constantly captured and juxtaposed with the image of stories she is narrating to remind the viewers that it is coming from her body. These differences in the technique and content of the two narrations exhibit the different levels and types of power each character possesses. Stingo, who has an omniscient point of view and knowledge over the narrative, will be shown to have power over the development of the storyline. On the other hand, Sophie, who only has a confined range of narration but is narrating her own past experience, rather than the more objective and impersonal narration of Stingo, will be shown to have more power over both the narrative and the viewer.
