- current research views reading as an interactive, sociocognitive process involving a text, a reader, and a social context within which the activity of reading takes place.
six component skills
1. Automatic recognition skills
2. Vocabulary and structural knowledge
3. Formal discourse structure knowledge
4. Content/world background knowledge
5. Synthesis and evaluation skills/strategies
6. Metacognitive knowledge and skills monitoring.
the way how fluent readers read
1. recognize and get meaning from words
2. begin forming a mental notion of the topic
3. use the semantic and syntactic information + form predictions and hypothesis using personal experience
4. try to confirm or reject these predictions, asking...
5. if the hypothesis is right → going on
wrong → reread , reform predictions
∴ for ELLs to read fluently, they must develop the ability to bring all of these elements together simultaneously and rapidly + be provided information and practice in all of the systems which contribute to making the process work.
