1.What do you think of the Direct Method?
First of all, the intent of the DM, learning how to communicate in the target language, is a good idea, since the student who studied with GTM several years doesn't speak well in the target language. However I'm not sure that all of the process and the rule of the DM is effective in making students to use the target language communicatively. Sometimes translation is easier to understand than demonstration through action or pictures.
해석 : 직접교수법에 대해 어떻게 생각하는가?
먼저 외국어로 어떻게 의사소통 하는지 배우는 것이라는 직접교수법의 목적은 좋은 생각이다. 왜냐하면 문법 번역식 교수법으로 수년간 공부한 학생이 목표 외국어로 잘 말하지 못하기 때문이다. 그러나 나는 직접교수법의 모든 과정과 모든 규칙이 학생들을 목표 외국어로 자연스럽게 의사소통하는데 효과적이라고는 확신할 수 없다. 때때로 번역이, 행동이나 그림을 통해 보여주는 예시보다 이해하기 쉽기 때문이다.
2.How is the Direct Method different than GTM?
The goal of the DM is communication in the target language. On the other hand the goal of the GTM is reading literature written in target language. So teachers of the GTM don't need to be able to speak foreign language but teachers of the DM are usually a native speakers. Vocabulary is taught through bi-lingual word lists in the GTM, but in the DM it is acquired naturally through using it in sentences. In the GTM, the grammar rule is given by the teacher, in the DM the students are to induce grammar rules through sentences by themselves.
