Ⅰ. Purpose
To separate each substance from a mixture by utilizing the difference in pK_a value
Ⅱ. Background
Extraction means transferring a solute dissolved in a solvent to another solvent. It is based on the difference in solubility of solute in two immiscible solvents.

Separation of phenol
1. Pour the upper layer into a new erlenmeyer flask C using the mouth of the separatory funnel. Add 30 mL of 6.0M sodium hydroxide solution and stir for 5 minutes.
2. Repeat the process similar to the separation of benzonic just before. Check the TLC of the organic layer, and if phenol remains, add 0.30 g of NaOH(s), stir for 5 minutes, and check TLC.
3. When the phenol is completely gone, transfer to a 500mL separatory funnel.
4. Shake 2~3 times as before and shake until there is no “hissing” sound.
5. When the layers are completely separated, take out the lower layer through the stopper into a 100mL Erlenmeyer flask D. Rinse the stem with water.
