Purpose
To understand the separation principle of chromatography and identify the metal ions in mixture using paper chromatography.

Principle
1) Chromatography
Chromatography is a technique often used by chemists to separate components of a mixture. Early chromatography is produced by pouring a pigment solution into a column filled with insoluble materials such as starch, alumina (Al2O3), silica (SiO2).Reference

This process was called chromatography because bands of different colors appear along the column. This technique can be applied extensively to isolate and identify compounds for simplification and efficiency of methods. The basics of chromatography are dividing a compound into stationary and mobile phases. The mobile phase moves through the stationary phase.
