In “Teaching and Learning Vocabulary for Second Language Learners,” Cheryl Zimmerman discusses the meaning of knowing a word, some challenging factors when it comes to teaching and learning vocabularies, and ways to select the words that teachers should teach. By addressing the topics, he argues that “covering every word that a student needs” is not teachers’ responsibility, and what they should do is to know about the meaning of “knowing a word” and help their students to move from their partial knowledge to effective word use. In addition, he writes that “Teachers should use principled instruction as they show learners how to select the new words they invest in, what they need to know about the words, and how to use word learning strategies.” He also argues that trying hard to utilize effective word-learning strategies and make students be exposed to words repeatedly is an important role of second language teachers.
