본문내용
In this essay, I would like to discuss about the Korean idol culture. The word ‘Idol’, originally means “a statue that is worshipped as a god” (“Idol,” 2010), now usually represents stars who are loved by huge fan club. In Korea, it refers to more specific meaning. Deeply influenced by pop stars in 1960s to 1980s in Western and Japan music industry, so-called ‘idol groups’ came out from 1990s. Generally, these groups, made up of good-looking, talented teenagers, are systemically selected by entertainment management firms and trained for long time. After debut, their career and schedule are thoroughly managed by the firms. (Lee, 2011) From H.O.T, which is considered as a first typical Korean idol group, idol groups dominated K-Pop scene nearly 20 years. Besides, recently they got popularity worldwide, especially in East Asia. It was so impressive to Korean that many researchers conducted researches on this topic. But, most of them focus on analyzing the phenomenon itself, not answering the fundamental question: What factors have affected to past and present of Korean idol culture industry? Using political economy approach and globalization theory, I will take a closer look into this unique culture to answer the question.
