Chapter 1. Language, Learning, and Teaching
At the beginning of this chapter, the author says that if a teacher wants to teach a foreign language successfully, he/she may ask the following questions about second language acquisition. The questions may be divided into seven categories; Learner Characteristics, Linguistic Factors, Learning Processes, Age and Acquisition, Instructional Variables, Context and Purpose. These questions have yet to receive the best answers, some of which are also tentative. In order to answer these questions, we should know the exact definition of language, learning, and teaching.
First of all, language is defined by some different scholars. Taken together, language is systematic and a set of arbitrary symbols, which are primarily vocal, but may also be visual, and has universal characteristics. Brown claimed that a teacher’s understanding of the language affects their teaching method.
