본문내용
As human population growth has increased dramatically since the last decade, the human race is facing a lot of challenges. At this very moment, on 21st November, 1:12 a.m., the World Population Clock ticks and shows there are 7,053,528,538 people all over the globe. Every second, two or three babies are coming to planet Earth (U.S.). As a result, the Earth has become overpopulated and now faces the limits of its carrying capacity.
According to U.S. census, the human population grew very slowly until the beginning of 20th century, which witnessed the industrial revolution, invention of penicillin and vaccinations. These phenomena caused the human population to surge rapidly. Between 1950 and 1990, the world population rose from 2.5 billion to 5 billion (Human). The population growth in those four decades was bigger than in the whole history of mankind and it keeps accelerating. It is estimated that by the year 2050, the world population will increase to 9 billion (Lin). It shows that we are now in an exponential growth phase – when birth rate (natality, or fertility) far exceeds death rate (mortality) – in other words, the human population will continue to skyrocket.
