본문내용
Written in 1993, Ha Jin’s “In Broad Daylight” is a short story depicting the public punishment of a Chinese woman for her promiscuity. The story is narrated in the first person peripheral point of view, through the viewpoint of an innocent young boy nicknamed “White Cat.” Why did Ha Jin choose to portray the story in this narrator, and not the main character, Grandma, or other townspeople? This is because the speaker possesses three important features - being an observer, youngness, naivety - which direct readers to the main theme. From this point of view, the story reveals the inhumanity and the low collective consciousness extent in New China.
The first important characteristic of the narrator is that he is an observer of the story.
