The Noir Themes of Chinatown: Existentialism and Freudianism
In a sense, film noir includes the reality of the time when the film was taken. In my opinion, it was perhaps a sharp criticism regarding popularized psychological pathology or a corrupt government. This was done by using an indirect expression melted in the film noir such as various camerawork or voiceover techniques. Chinatown shows us the reality which fraudulently works for self-interest and, in the process, reveals characters’ mental disorders or sexual duress. The characters’ psychology was influenced by the noir themes such as Existentialism, Freudianism, and social disorders derived from the circumstances of the time. Because of this, Chinatown is considered a film that has well-represented noir themes.
Jake Gittes embodies Existentialism of the noir theme which we may see from his meaningless life.

Noah Cross acted out a symbol of Freudianism and the homme fatale. At the beginning of the film, we could not see him, but could feel his presence as an invisible power. He in fact has pretty appropriate character. He embodies a villain at the city who controls the city water and the public power, and, in the moral aspect, he symbolizes homme fatale. According to ‘Film Noir’, the author said “the homme fatale, enigmatic, duplicitous and destructive is the male counterpart to the deadly female and the opposite of the male victim. He appears most frequently as the ostensibly caring husband or protector who is trying to either to murder his wife or drive her mad (89).” As we see, Noah Cross’s character fits it quite well.
