Being good and Being bad: The Good, the Evil, and Hansel and Gretel
As a human being with not much experience in distinguishing between the good and the evil, children learn, or more precisely, are educated to internalize certain standards developed by the society in this regard. Without hammering the notion of being good into the children`s minds, fairy tales allow them to learn naturally and voluntarily the social standards of distinguishing good from evil. Thus, one of the main methods of teaching such moral values and standards is through fairy tales with definite characters on each side of the morality. By reading the fairy tales with such categorization, the readers including especially children judge the characters and determine the moral values as he or she identifies good from evil.

However, the behaviors of Hansel and Gretel in deciding to kill the witch by putting her in the oven alive show a certain kind of "evilness" inherent in human beings. In other words, in general, children represent the pure version of a human being - a person who has not been educated about prejudice, greed, conflicts and other kinds of immorality an adult internalized and acquired voluntarily or involuntarily while living a life. But by showing that even the purest form of a human being - Hansel and Gretel, the children - is capable of such gruesome decision making, it can be argued that "Hansel and Gretel" tell you the story of the double-sided nature of a human.
