운동선수의 대다수는 ergogenic aids를 섭취함으로써 운동능력을 더욱 향상시키고자 하며 ) 그 사용률 또한 계속 증가하는 추세를 보이고 있다 (Table 1).2) 특히 보디빌더나 역기 선수와 같이 고강도 운동을 하는 선수는 단백질 분해의 최소화 및 근육량 증가를 매우 중요시 생각하여 이러한 효능 위주로 supplement를 섭취하고자 한다. 이를 위한 ergogenic aids 중 하나로 leucine의 대사산물인 beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB)가 있다. )단백질은 근육조직의 형성 및 기능에 중요하기 때문에 예전부터 운동선수들이 가장 많이 선호해 온 보충제 중 하나이다. Whey protein이나 albumin과 같은 protein 형태 외에도 개별적인 아미노산의 형태로도 섭취하고 있는데 그 중 하나가 branched-chain amino acids (BCAA)이다. BCAA는 근육의 연료로 쓰이므로 근글리코겐을 보존하고, 단백질의 전반적인 분해율을 감소 및 예방한다고 알려져 있다. , ), BCAA에는 isoleucine과 valine 그리고 leucine이 있는데 최근에는 leucine의 대사산물인 HMB를 중심으로 여러 연구들이 이뤄지고 있으며, 많은 운동선수들은 골격근 향상을 기대하며 위와 같은 대사산물 형태를 추가로 섭취하고 있다.
그렇다면 HMB가 실제로 운동선수에게 운동능력 향상의 효과를 가져오는지 또한 효과가 있다면 HMB의 효능을 극대화할 수 있는 섭취방법 즉, 섭취기간 및 복용량을 알아보고자 한다.
