What is the message of Slaughterhouse-Five?
I had a hard time to read this book and understand it. The story is not the one I used to read. This book is about Word War 2 and Vonnecut, the author, blames the war and the people at that time. Throughout this book, the author criticizes the people who had no regret on what they did and justify what they did during the war. Using the irony, he keeps his sarcastic attitude toward the society and people. And this book has a very complicating story. I think the complicating story of this book is the tool which reflects complicating society in America.
The author says irrational society in the scene about bombing in Dresden. Many innocent people were dead from the attack, but the people justify their decision for attack on Dresden under the name of justice. Billy did not even see the attack and what he found coming out the shelter is heaps of corpses and the ruins. He helped the clean the ruin and the corpses without feeling sorry and sad. Billy was like the people who kill person and do not feel any guilty. Edgar Derby was killed because German soldiers thought he looted a teapot. He was the one who joined the army for justice. His death means the death of American spirit. In this book, I thought he was the only person who had the faith. Billy and Derby were close, but after his death Billy came back to his normal life. Generally we are in deep grief after close friend’s death. This means disappearing humanism.
