The first stage : Reduce
This first stage may be termed the reduction or quick fix stage.
People are trying to reduce the impact of their over-consuming lifestyles by changing light bulbs, insulating their homes, recycling trash, buying non-toxic cleaners, using graywater, compost and mulch in their back yards and carpooling.
The second stage : Reuse
Existing buildings, roads, landscape and utility networks are employed in novel ways.
Roofs become gardens or energy collectors with skylights and solar panels.
Existing roadways can become rights-of-way for electric trains and bicycles.
Existing downtown streets can become pedestrian malls, and residential streets can become slow streets.
Ornamental landscapes can be converted to fruit orchards.
The third stage : Recycle
The recycling stage is the stage where the previously-transformed urban ele-ments are reinforced within a new urban pattern.
The three stages will be going on simultaneously in a patchwork fashin, much as regeneration occurs in a large forest.
Shaping the conditions for eco-city evolution
The successful evolution of an eco-city will depend on the extent to which we are conscious and can shape the forces propelling its evoution.
Three imperatives will form the basis for eco-sity evolution : The need for social justice, prosperity, and a healthy ecology.
Social justice is the gateway to sustainability.
