AgFund is a financial service company specializing in investments and accounting services for farmers and farmer-owned cooperatives which is dominated by white men. Even though Cynthia Mitchell was the most qualified trainee to position in northern Indiana, she was not placed there because this territory was very conservative, and thus customers were not comfortable doing business with a woman. For this reason, Cynthia was placed in more a hospitable region and then she succeeded in her work place even though she was discriminated against as a woman in the earlier. As a successful employee, more regions are controlled by her and hence she needs her rep who could take over her old job. After careful consideration, Cynthia discovered Steve Ripley. Steve is the most qualified trainee: a recent MBA from UCLA, a successful summer internship at AgFund, a stint overseas as an economic analyst for the U.S. government. However, Cynthia is considering whether to hire Steve or not because he is black. Her customers do not want work with black people, thus AgFund would lose their customers when she recruits Steve as her second rep. Even though, it is the responsibility of companies which need to consider social issues such as race and sexual discrimination, I think that it is better for Cynthia not to hire Steve. There are three reasons why she should not offer the job to him. First, shareholders are owners of the company, therefore their profits should be the first consideration. Second, analyzing customers and satisfying their favors is what companies need to do to sustain their market competition. Third, for Steve, it is better to give him chances to be in a more hospitable region.
