Abstract척추동물은 무척추 동물과는 다르게 외부의 pathogen에 대한 면역반응을 수행할 수 있다. 이러한 면역반응은 많은 면역세포들에 의하여 이루어지며, 그들 중에서도 특히 Heamatopoietic stem cell(HSC, 조혈모세포), T-cell, dendritic cell이 각광을 받고 있다. 이는 모두 HSC로부터 분화되어서 형성되어지며, 각각 세포 타입에 특이한 특성을 지니며 분화 발달해 간다. 이러한 면역세포의 분화는 여러 가지 요인에 의하여 조절을 받으며, 면역세포의 생성을 활성화 또는 억제해 나가며 인체 내의 면역세포의 수의 항상성을 유지해 나가고 있다. 이러한 면역 세포의 분화 조절 기작은 많이 밝혀지지 않은 미지의 영역이지만 현재 많은 곳에서 활발한 연구가 진행 되어 분화의 기작이 하나 둘씩 밝혀지고 있는 실정이다. 앞으로 연구가 지속되어 면역세포의 분화 조절 기작을 밝혀낼 수 있다면, 이를 통해 의약 개발과 치료 등의 많은 분야에 적용 가능할 것이다.

사람의 재조합형 G-CSF(filgrastim)은 175개의 아미노산으로 구성된 당단백질로써 대장균에서 생산된다. filgrastim은 주로 CFU-G에 작용하여 호중구의 생산을 촉진한다. 이는 호중구의 탐식기능과 세포독성을 강화시킨다. filgrastim은 sargramostim와 마찬가지로 항암 치료나 골수이식 후 일시적으로 발생하는 심각한 호중구 감소증을 치료하는데 효과적이다. 이는 호중구의 감소로 인하여 유발된 면역 저하로 인한 진균 감염이나 패혈증 으로 인한 사망율 감소에 도움이 된다. 또한 GM-CSF와 IL-3의 결합 단백질인 PIXY321이 있다. 이는 임상실험결과 호중구와 혈소판 생성에 있어서 GM-CSF보다도 효과적인 것으로 알려졌다.
이처럼 면역세포들은 이미 새로운 치료제로서 사용되어지고 연구되어지고 있으며, 차세대 산업으로 주목 받고 있다. 이에 따라, 우리도 조혈모세포를 비롯한 면역세포를 재조명하여 그 의의와 효용성을 인지하여 새로운 치료법 개발의 의지를 늦추지 않도록 해야 한다.
