Being the country with the 4th largest landmass in the globe, China may have been a sleeping dragon for centuries. In the past China may have suffered through devastating events such as the Opium War, The Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution, but China cannot be underestimated in the 21st century. Since 1978, the “giant” has experienced average real growth of more than 9% a year, a number larger than the growth rate of the 4 Asian Tigers (Zuliu Hu & Mohsin S. Khan, 1997). According to Warren Buffet, “The 19th century belonged to England, the 20th century belonged to the U.S., and the 21st century belongs to China. Invest accordingly.” In my opinion, China has the ‘Soft Power’ to attract the rest of the globe, a trait which the U.S. relatively lacks.
Currently great numbers of non-Chinese corporations have relocated their businesses and factories to China because of the more favorable manufacturing and regulatory environment in China than in their home country. For one thing, China provides a cheap labor force. Every year, around 2% of the 1.3 billion people in China move to urban areas to find a new job other than farming (CIA World Factbook, 2010).
