The Peony Pavilion`s Relationship with Buddhism
Buddhism is introduced in China in 5th century. It underwent development era through the Han Dynasty, Three Kingdoms, and the Jin Dynasty. In 9th century, the Tang and the Sui Dynasty reunite country as well as culture and religion. So Buddhism became very important. In the Song Dynasty, movable type printing is invented. So lots of Buddhism scriptures could be printed. As a result, Buddhism became very popular. In the Ming Dynasty, Buddhism became official religion. As we all know, Mudan Ting written in Ming dynasty, we can not think about it without Buddhism.



At the time that The Peony Pavilion was written, Buddhism was an influential religion. As a result, allusions to Buddhism are seen throughout the play. From the use of mirrors to identify characters to the representation of Guanyin in the play, understanding Buddhism can greatly enhance the understandings of the characters as well as The Peony Pavilion in its entirety.
