Originally, it was a part of the federation known as La República de Gran Colombia which gained independence from Spain in 1822. Ecuador became a separate country in 1830. Today, Ecuador is the smallest country in South America with the size of Colorado. The ethnic heritage of the people of Ecuador is diverse. About one-fourth of the population is indigenous to the area, about half is mestizo (mixture of Indian and European), and the remaining one-fourth is comprised of other ethnicities, including African and Caucasian.
