Introduction
Among the European States, EMU officially stands for Economic and Monetary Union. A monetary union is a situation where several countries in Europe have agreed to share a single currency and monetary system among participating Member States of the Europe. The European Economic and Monetary Union(EMU) consists of three stages coordinating economic policy and culminating with the adoption of the euro, the European Union’s single currency. The European states decided that the EMU and a single European market were essential to the implementation of the European Union, which was created to advance economic and social unity among the people of Europe and to propel Europe to greater prominence in the international community.
Historical background to the European Monetary Union
First attempt to create an economic and monetary union between the members of the European Communities goes back to an initiative by the European Commission in 1969, which set out the need for “greater co-ordination of economic policies and monetary cooperation”(Barre Report, 1969)[1]. At the European Summit in The Hague in 1969, the Heads of State and Government of the European Community agreed to prepare a plan for economic monetary union.
