The ministry of education in Korea officially announced the 2015 Revised
Curriculum. It is essential to understand the primary concepts of integration embedded
in the 2015 Revised Curriculum and curriculum components such as key concept,
generalized principle, skills, standards, etc., in particular, of content organization.
Then, each subject curriculum can be developed along with general ideas and
guidelines of the 2015 Curriculum, as well as each curriculum is inextricably linked
with the curriculum framework. The purpose of this study is to explore theoretical
frameworks of integration and to draw implications for the new curriculum by the
analysis of theories of Erickson and Drake. Erickson suggested Concept-Based
Interdisciplinary Curriculum focusing on concept as the basis of integrative thinking
and conceptual understanding. In addition, she argued for the integration of content
and process, in other words, knowledge for students to learn and skills to perform.
Drake emphasized standards as the basis of integration. Standards include
interdisciplinary concepts and related skills in interdisciplinary works. Curriculum
contents, teaching and learning, and assessment are integrally grounded in standards.
Using these frameworks, this study draws meanings and implications of integration for
the new curriculum and its effective practices.
