The 17th century landscape paintings have been researched focusing on individual analysis of each work with the introduction of new paintings such as Byulseoyugeo-do and Gugok-do, with Gyehoe-do as the center. These paintings provide various social cultural aspects of the 17th century, a period with lack of inherited paintings. Not only do they provide the style of the landscape painting development of the 17th century, but are also important in identifying the facts as the preceding style of the 18th century landscape painting.This paper focuses on the private collection Yusamburak screen (遊三釜落屛) to find out what various aspects of the 17th century landscape paintings are overlapped and in what forms. Yusamburak screen is an eight-fold screen created to commemorate sightseeing of Samburak, Hwasukyeon, Kosukjeong areas of Cheolwon, Kangwondo by Nam In faction people including Cho Kyung, Huh Mok, Lee Goe, Huh Lip, Lee Yeonnyeon in 1664. Each fold is composed of the title along with a screen made of the prose, work title, and drawing in that order similar to the screen composure of Gye-chuk. The fold 1, 2, 3 have the actual view of the sights visited during the trip, and the fold 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 express private estate of the participants. These forms of Yusamburak screen demands it to be an important resource as it reflects various aspects mentioned previously regarding the tendency of the 17th century landscape paintings in one painting.
This paper would like to examine the composition and the production details of the participants and the sightseeing trip of Cheolwon, Kangwondo area related records first as the production background of the work. After that, by examining the current condition, composition, and contexts of each fold, landscape painting trends and art historical significances, as well as the social economic production background of the middle of the 17th century will be studied.
