SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
THE FIRST GENERATON OF SOCIAL WORKERS IN THE U.S.
INFLUENTIAL LINES OF CONTINUITY
CONCLUSION
한국어 초록
Social work in the United States of America (U.S.) embraces both sense and sensibility. I have employed Jane Austen's alliterative title to focus us on the differences between rationality - or the empirical approach to knowing she called "sense" - and "sensibility," which historian Simon Schama has characterized as, " . . . a generalized preference for liberty over authority, spontaneity over calculation, candor over artifice, friendship over hierarchy, heart over head, and nature over culture." 1) 2) Sense, as a way of knowing, may then be best linked to the valorization of reason and to the new Western science of Voltaire's Enlightenment. Enthusiasts of the Age of Reason became embroiled in sustained and sometimes bitter conflict with the Romantics, who endorsed Rousseau's worship of nature, beauty, and emotional truths.
