ABSTRACT
In this paper, I tried to explore national identity represented by North and South Korean
textbooks. I used 4th grade N. and S. Korean elementary school textbooks. Regarding N. Korean
textbooks, Socialist Moral published in 1972 and, 1995, and Korean in 1987 and 1997 were
investigated. As S. Korean textbooks, Moral published in 1979, 1987 and 1996, and Korean in 1976
and 1987 were analyzed. This research has a number of main questions: (1) what are main symbols
to signify the nation; (2) how boundaries between “we” and “other” are constructed; (3) how
“qualified” and “unqualified” national subjects are represented on the basis of gender and (4) there is
any significant difference, applying the above questions to the Korean textbooks of 1970s, 1980s, and
1990s. To look at national discourses in the textbooks, I employed culturalist and feminist
perspectives.
I found that family and land metaphor was quite often used to signify national discourses in the
both societies. The construction of a qualified/disqualified national subject and the narrative were
more likely to be gender stereo-typical. The tough historical experiences such as wars and colonial
experiences have been used to unify various kinds of people, silencing gender differences and its
asymmetrical power relations. National discourses tended to produce the national subject who would
be royal to the nation-state but is not sensitive to social difference or inequality. Thus, future
textbooks in relation to unification policy need to include more progressive and critical national
subject in the ways in which social differences are able to be seriously considered.
