본 논문은 이황의 역학에 대한 기존의 연구 성과를 점검하고,
그의 역학에 대한 올바른 연구방향과 그 미래지향적 의미를 이끌
어내기 위하여 그의 역학사상의 이론적 체계와 특징을 고찰하고자
하였다. 퇴계의 역학은 기본적으로 ‘義理’의 실천을 일차적인 목표
로 삼고 있다. 따라서 ‘상수’라는 개념은 다만 의리를 실천하기 위
한 경험적 표준 또는 기준을 제공해 주는 것이었다. 朱熹가 象數
에 일차적 중요성을 두고서 이를 통하여 의리를 귀납적으로 이끌
어내는 노선을 견지한 것과 비교하여, 퇴계가 의리에 일차적 중요
성을 두면서 의리로부터 연역된 당위에 대한 경험적 근거를 찾기
위한 기초로서 象數를 탐구한 점에서 이들은 서로 구별된다. 퇴계
는 상수를 구체적인 경험세계에 의리를 실현시켜 주는 경험적 기
준으로 파악하고 있다. 곧 그는 행위의 所當然과 그 필연적인 所
以然을 일치시킬 목적으로 상수를 연구하고 그 상수를 의리와 유
기적으로 통합시키고 있다. 따라서 퇴계가 『啓蒙傳疑』를 저술함으
로써 상수의 탐구에 전력했던 사실은 그가 의리를 실천하는 것을
중시했다는 것과 결코 모순되는 일이 아니다. 오히려 상수를 힘써
탐구하였던 그의 노력은 의리적 실천을 위하여 필수적으로 요구되
는 격물궁리의 한 과정으로서 그의 성리학 체계와 관련하여 일관
성을 가지는 것이다. 퇴계의 역학 사상은 자연에 내재해 있는 변
화의 세계를 인간의 주체적이고 도덕적인 세계로 해석하고 있다는
점에서 그의 이기론 및 심성수양론과 긴밀하게 결합되어 있다. 퇴
계의 역학사상은 그의 우주론, 심성론, 그리고 역철학사, 禮學과의
연관성 문제, 그리고 현대 세계의 생태계의 위기 문제, 현대 세계
의 사회문화적 문제 등을 해결하는 이론적 틀의 탐색 등과 같은
방향에서 그 연구를 심화시킬 수 있을 것이다. 곧 퇴계의 역학은
우주론과 심성론 수양론 등 그의 철학 전체와 밀접한 연관관계를
가지고 있기 때문에 사회과학과 자연과학 등을 중심으로 다양한
관점과 분야, 시각에서 접근할 수 있을 것이다.

영어 초록

This thesis intended to investigate the theoretical system and
characteristic of Toegaeh's Yi Xue thought for the purpose of deriving its
futuristic meaning from examination of accomplishment of already achieved
study and the right establishment of the orientation of research about his
Yi Xue. Especially, this thesis exerted to illuminate concrete contents of
Toegaeh's Yi Xue while emphasizing that the several theories seemed to
conflict or contrast one another really are composed of one coherent
system.
Toegaeh's Yi Xue ordinarily has the basic purpose in practice of moral
principle. According to what Toegaeh's views, the conception of ‘emblem
and number’ offers to the experiential criterion for practice of moral
principle. While Zhuhsi adhered to the lines that he derived a moral
principle from the inductive method attaching primary importance to
‘emblem and number’, Toegaeh would search for ‘emblem and number’ as
a foundation, on which he look for the experiential basis of what should be
deduced from it while making originally much of moral principle.
That is to say, Toegaeh searched for ‘emblem and number’ and unified
it with moral principle organically in order that he might make
obligation[what should be] coincide with its necessary reason. Thus, the
fact that Toegaeh indulged himself in the investigation of ‘emblem and
number’ by writing Qimeng Zhuan Yi[啓蒙傳疑] never conflict with that he
gave importance to the moral principle. Rather than, the effort of his
inquiry of ‘emblem and number’ is a process of the investigation of things
and their principles is coherent with his system of Neo-confucianism. This
is the important reason why Toegaeh thought that the ‘emblem and
number’ ought to be researched in the Book of Changes.
We could deepen the subdivided research about Toegaeh's thought of Yi
Xue in such directions as his cosmology, cultivating theory of mind and
human nature, viewpoint of philosophical history of Yi Xue, problem of its
relation with Li Xue, inquiry of the theoretical dimension for resolving the
crisis of ecosystem, and the investigation of the theoretical system by
which one solves social and cultural problems of contemporary world.
Especially, a new sphere of study of Toegaeh's Yi Xue could also
approach in the several point of views such as social science or natural
science because it is intimately related with cosmology, theory of mind and
human nature, and cultivating theory in his philosophical system.
