The name of Mencius is 'K'o' and his alias is ‘Tzuwu’. He was born in the fourth year of the King, Chou. He pursued his knowledge under Tzussu. At about age 40, he traveled from state in effort to campaign the principles of the ancient rulers to the feudal lords. But he could not put his political philosophy into practice as he wished. Therefore, he concentrated his mind on writing and education of his days.He wrote “Mencius' Seven Books” explaining Confucianism and added some things Confucius had not mentioned such as the theory ‘man’s nature was essentially good. He asserted the so called “four beginnings” of the virtues of human-heartedness, righteousness, propriety and wisdom.
The practical moral education combined with formal education in the required behaviorism pattern had been stressed in his educational thought. His objectives and idea in his educational thought revealed those of the practicability of education, curricular areas, methods, the man-centerness practical education and charactor building for humanization.
His educational thought consisted of the ethical doctrine of innate goodness and of human-heartedness-righteousness. The moral education and the formal school education made a great importance in his educational thought. Also a definite educational philosophy and many other educational materials have been offered.
Therefore, I would like to study Mencius, the great Oriental educator's educational thought in his great original texts in order to research its characteristics of the Oriental culture and its ethical consciousness.
This essay is not only to enrich the national educational philosophy but also to give an emphasis on the moral education which may have been ignored rather than a new assertion or a theory.
The aim is to find out the true education after studying comparatively Menciuse ducational concept and today's modern concepts to straighten the national ethics, to make consistent education and to create the sound mental faculties and a right view of life.
In the mid 1970's, I feel, we have a duty to innovate or improve the spiritual education influencing the national fortune and the modernization of Korea. The significance in this essay is to borrow perhaps Mencius' ethical educational principles on how to cultivate men of virtue and wisdom, to reach an understanding of the proper national Korean tradition from the merits gain out comparative studies with an aim to systemize update our educational theory, and to inculcate our national ethics for the stimulation of moral justice.
