The history of Korean college education is rather long, but its modern history is relatively short. Although in the 1880's modern types of schools were established according to the Imperal message on education by King Kojong, higher education in Korea barely kept itself in existence after 1910 when Korea entered into a humiliating diplomatic relation with Japan. After liberation from Japan in 1945, however, the numbers of higher educational institutions have been increased and eight percent of high school graduates go to colleges. This is higher than the international level. But when we evaluate the function of college education substantially, there still remain many problems.
Recently, however, there have various college reformation movements and much attention has been given to a many-sided search for a new direction and quality of college education both in and out of the campus. It is essentially desired in the process of development of college education that not only the quality of college eduucation must be improved, but also some common guideline of course work rearrangement aiming at educationg a man to be an integrated person should be established.
Here we try to find a certain significant datum concerning the reformation of college education, sumarizing a study on general education in colleges:
1. Although the model of general education in Korean colleges is after that of the United States educational system and has existed uniformally since the American military administration, some scrutiny of it has been done from many sides recently.
2. The result of administration of general education division which was brought about by an act of public school establishment has not only made general education fruitful, but has contributed a great deal to the academic atmosphere on the campus.
3. In the United States, England, France, Germany, and Japan it is quite common that they offer general education during first one or two years of college.
4. The tendency to disregard general education on the college level turned out to be an obstacle in the process of development of college education notwithstanding its great contribution to mazimiaing professional education as a means. Therefore we should understand the fact that the creative ability and integrating function which were trained through general education tend to extend the terms of professions and techniques.
5. The goal, teaching content, and teaching methods of general education should be re-examined and reformed. Up to now the contents of courses have usually been discursive, mean, and impractical. Therefore, students should be allowed to select freely their courses out of many 3 credit courses offered. And lecture type teaching methods should be changed to a discussion, inquiry, and homework centered type of teaching method.
6. We have done educational evaluation from time to time and have reflected on student's everyday learning attitudes toward their grades and even though the whole year flunking system has been a great warning to easy-going students, it must be reconsidered. On the other hand, it is desirable that summer or winter schools would be developed into shortening the school year.
7. Class organization according to the study fields was efficient in training students democratically. And it is thought to be reasonable to let students select appropriate subjects themselves out of the differently leveled subjects.
8. It is desirable to give opportunities to students to develop their personalities and encourage them to enjoy dilettante lives through extra curricular activities.
9. It is also desirable to organize a student body to elevate students' status through autonomous activities and there must be a plan to utilze assistantships to support strong leadership and convincible guidance.
10. It is required to provide such facilities as dormitories, health and welfare centers, and shopping centers on the campus to foster students both mentally and physically.
Finally, considering the above mentioned we again propose that general education in college should be strengthened and systematized, and there must be a ceaseless effort to search for a more reasonable managing plan.
