이 글에서는 한국의 지역 가운데 제주를 대상으로 하고, 제주 민속과 몽골의 민속 가운데 유사성 내지 친연성을 지닌 것을 논의의 대상으로 한다. 구체적인 논의의 대상은 제주민속과 관련이 있다고 판단되는 민속사례(버드나무 민속, 석인상과 돌하르방, 아르히와 아랑지, 마문화, 연료와 쇠똥,피뿌리풀, 겔과 거리)와 언어 등 여덟 가지로 한정한다. 아울러 제주민속이 한국 민속의 하나이기 때문에 몽골과의 비교에서 그것이 곧 제주만의 특징이라고 주장할 수 없다는 점을 밝힌다.

영어 초록

This paper is an attempt to compare folklore between Jeju Island and Mongolia in the cross-cultural perspective. I have attempted to compare between two folklore prior to focused on the subject and have dealt the folklore based on that result. I have been worked for cross-cultural research on the Korean-Mongolian folklore concretely. This is one of the motivations to complete this paper. The subject of the paper is Jeju Island and some similarities of among Jeju folklore and Mongolian folklore will be discussed. The 8 examples will be discussed in this paper, I have set the Jeju folklore is one of the Korean Folklore, therefore they are not the
only characteristics of Jeju Island. The academic goal of the cross-cultural study understands of other culture. However, the ultimate goal is understand our culture respectively. In other words, searching for the cultural identity is the basic goal. Mongolia and Korea, especially understand Jeju Island culture is very important task to understand two cultures. We have to look at the cultural similarities, differences, prior to compare two cultures. Not to mention it, qualitative approach is mandatory. Both synchronic, diachronic perspectives are very important
otherwise we may get lost if we do not set up the direction. The size of the comparison is also critical. The theme ‘Looking through the eyes of Cultural Comparison between Jeju Island and Mongolia’ is a large scale comparison and must deal not only synchronic but diachronic perspectives. But if we discuss Jeju culture, some historical relationship should be discussed in the macro perspectives.
The lack of the paper allowance and my ability, I have to limit the subjects and deal with synchronically. This is an assignment for further research, however; the macro perspective meant diachronic in the context of history, and looking for the other meaning the behind of history. The folklore has some meaning in the context of culture in the dimension of material. I have attempted to extract the meaning of the Jeju culture and read some portrait of culture of
Jeju Island. This opens a new prospect in the field of cross-cultural study.
