"한국 학계에서 역사교육의 목표로 역사적 사고력에 대한 논의가 활발하다. 몇몇 연구자는 역사적 사고력을 범주로 구분하고, 세부 기능을 제시하기도 하였다. 그런데 많은 초등 및 중학교 교사들은 그러한 기능 자체를 이해하기도 어려워하며, 실제 그러한 기능을 사료 읽기에 어떻게 적용해야 할지, 어떻게 가르쳐야 할지 막막해 하기도 한다. 본고는 이러한 문제의 측면에서 사료 읽기에 익숙하지 않은 초등 및 중학교 교사들을 위해 사료 읽으며 역사적으로 사고하기의 구체적인 방안을 제시하고자 한다.
본고에서는 역사적으로 사고하면서 사료 읽기를 지도하는 방안을 1) 탐구 문제 결정하기 2) 사료의 표면적 내용 파악하기(표면적 읽기) 3) 사료의 증거능력 평가하기 (분석적 읽기) 4) 사료 내용을 비교하고 종합하기 (해석적 읽기)로 제시하고자 한다. 본고에서 제시하는 읽기 방안은 순차적인 읽기 단계를 상정하는 것은 아니다. 표면적 읽기, 분석적 읽기, 해석적 읽기는 거의 동시적으로 진행되며, 때로 어떤 읽기 방식은 생략될 수도 있다."

영어 초록

"This article suggests reading strategies of historical texts for teachers and students who are not familiar with historical thinking and making inference from source materials. Teaching historical thinking has been emphasized as one of the most important purposes of school history. A few Korean scholars have attempted to define and categorize it into several sub-skills. However, school teachers, who in particular had few opportunities to be exposed to historical scholarship because history was not their major discipline in their colleges, have frequently expressed their frustration to understand and adopt historical thinking to their teaching history. In addition, several American and British experimental studies have revealed that many elementary and secondary school teachers and every level of school students display limited skills in reading historical texts compared to historians. Other studies showed that if they learned how to solve historical problems and how to read historical texts, they were able to use them. Therefore, this article attempts to give an idea to teachers and students how to think historically while reading historical texts.
