본 연구는 원예활동이 지적장애아의 자아개념에 미치는 효과를 알아보기 위한 단일대상 실험연구로서, 연구의 대상은 경상북도 경산시의 J초등학교 4, 5학년 학생 중 KISE-KIT 검사(국립특수교육원, 2002) 및 사회 성숙도 검사(김승국ㆍ김옥기, 1995)에서 지적장애아로 판별되고, 다른 중재를 받고 있지 않은 3명의 학생을 선정하였다. 실험은 주 3회, 6주간 총 18회기에 걸쳐 실시하였으며, 자료처리는 사전ㆍ사후 자아개념 진단 검사를 실시한 후 각각의 문항별 원점수 변화 추이를 백분율(%)로 환산하여 비교 분석하고, 각 항목별로 구체적인 내용을 알아보기 위하여 이를 Likert식 4단계 평정 척도표로 제시하였다.
연구결과, 원예활동이 지적장애아의 학업적 자아개념, 사회적 자아개념, 신체적 자아개념, 정서적 자아개념을 향상시키는데 효과적인 것으로 나타났다.

This study is a single subject experimental research to find the effects of the Horticultural Therapy program on a self-concept of students with Intellectual disability, and specific dependent items are selected of scholastic self-concept, social self-concept, physical self-concept, and emotional self-concept.
The conclusions derived from the result of this study were as follows;
Firstly, the horticultural therapy program is efficient to improve the scholastic self-concept of students with intellectual disability. Through raising vegetations as well as planting chrysanthemum, tomato, and anthurium, those students with intellectual disability seemed like to improve the scholastic self-concept by becoming confident that they could plant and raise vegetations, gaining their power of concentration and willingness to do anything, and therefore leading to positively participating in learning activities.
Secondly, the horticultural therapy program is efficient to improve the social self-concept of students with intellectual disability. Through touching and watering vegetations, they seemed like to improve the social self-concept by gaining ability of interacting each other and watching their works and gainging self-confidence for communication with their friends with more confident.
Thirdly, the horticultural therapy program is efficient to improve the physical self-concept of students with intellectual disability. In order to plant and garden vegetations, they must move a whole body and think in a pleasure way. Thus, they showed something positive on all the activities, and therefore leading to improving the physical self-concept.
Lastly, the horticultural therapy program is efficient to improve the emotional self-concept of students with intellectual disability. They seemed like to improve the emotional self-concept by having emotional stabilities through having interest in vegetations and taking care of them with a love.
