On Africa`s Serengeti Plain, the mighty roar of a lion is heard for miles around. Wildebeests and zebras raise their ears and run for their lives. They don`t want to be a hungry lion`s next meal. But for several months, a mysterious illness silenced many of the fearsome roars. Between january and September 1994, more than 1,000 lions died in the Serengeti, East Africa`s largest wildlife park. It was what one scientist called "the most dramatic die-off of lions anyone has ever seen." And no one could explain it.
A team of scientists finally solved the mystery. The lions are feeling better, too. In 1996, A scientific report in Nature magazine explained that the lions had died from a disease found mainly in dogs, called canine distemper.
A MYSTERIOUS DISEASE
Park rangers first noticed that the lions were behaving strangely. They were twitching madly, did not move about with their usual grace, and hid from the sun. The disease spread quickly among the lions, who constantly lick one another`s faces. "It was very sad," said Heribert Hofer, a German researcher. "You study hundreds of animals and know them as individyals. Suddenly they are dying from something you don`t understand."
Scientists studied the body tissues of sick lions and discovered the canine distemper virus. They guess that the lions caught it from hyenas, which may have picked up the germs at village dumps visited by dogs. Humans living in the area own about 30,000 dogs, and the dog population is growing rapidly.
A RIGHTER FUTURE
Scientists are working hard to prevent another outbreak. Giving the lions vaccination shots would be difficult, but researchers are raising money to vaccinate dogs living in the park.
Meanwhile the lions are rebounding from the deadly virus. Two-thirds of those infected have recovered. The lionesses are eating better. Cubs are surviving longer. And once again, the king of the beasts is announcing his health with that trademark roar.
