In Marie Antoinette: The Journey, the author describes a life of French queen, Marie Antoinette. The author of this book, Antonia Fraser, is well known for many historical books; she wrote several biographies, such as Mary Queen of Scots, The Wives of Henry VIII, and Cromwell. She was awarded for the Wolfson History Prize, the St. Louis Literary Award, and the Medal of the Historic Association 2000. In this book, Fraser covers Marie Antoinette’s a whole life, from the day she was born to the day she died. The author tries to contrast Marie Antoinette’s brilliant early life and her later sufferings. Also, Fraser attempts to unravel the cruel myth and salacious distortions of Marie Antoinette.
I liked the author’s writing style that included a lot of miscellaneous information. She used many of personal documents, such as Marie Antoinette’s letters and king’s journal. This book is a very detailed, engrossing biography of Marie Antoinette. She provides sufficient background information to put the historical events in context. For instance, Fraser isn’t just revealing the fact that Marie Antoinette never said, “Let them eat cake.” As a matter of fact, this story was first told about Spanish princess who married Louis XIV a hundred years before
